Exo One, Byte Size Review, PS5
I have been playing video games for a heap of years now…(I’m getting so old). I can honestly say the most important change I have seen to this hobby I love, is the arrival of legit, top tier Indie Developers. They are brave, ingenious, and creative. They tread where big developers are too scared too, and offer such a massive array of experiences. Exo One is the perfect example of this. Unique, beautiful, fun, and relaxing.
Exo One is a game about controlling a new gravity drive powered ship across alien planet surfaces. Manipulating gravity and momentum has to be mastered to move around. Locating launchers will fire the ship off into space and to the next world. These launchers eventually have minor puzzles that need to be met first…… but don’t recoil yet!
Everything in Exo One is built to be “Chill AF”
Exo One is about moving, flowing and exploring the minimalist alien worlds, without any sweat at all. Nothing is really explained outside the initial lessons on gravity and when and where to use it to best effect. After that, its about exploring and almost ‘feeling’ for the path ahead.
Exo One does not have complex systems, a deep narrative, or a clear end goal. It’s a game about just chilling and enjoying the movement and light show. Technically, it is super well made. The graphics on the PS5 sing and the audio add to the immersion of each planet. Headphones are a must!
The dev ‘Exbleative’ is a tiny team from Australia and as I said from the get-go. It is amazing what a few clever people can do with creative freedom and some bravery to give a cool idea a nudge. Exo One has been on PC since 2021, but its arrival on PS5 is my first time experiencing it. Suffice is to say, it’s a great wee game and a total pallet cleanser from the rank and file big budget titles currently around.
Need a break from the RPG grind, the rinse in repeat open worlders, or the chaos of modern FPS’s?…..then get some chill Exo One in your eye balls.
