Classified: France ‘44 Review (PS5)

Tactical Turn-Based games like Classified: France ’44 Back were all the rage back in the day. With the likes of XCOM, Jagged Alliance, and Battle Tech leading the pack for me, I loved them.

Thankfully Classified: France ‘44, from Team17, keeps the ball rolling with a great interpretation of the classic WWII Turn-Based Tactical game.

Midnight Suns, review

Midnight Suns is a big game and it came to us late in the year. So we thought it was best to let Dylan and Guy have a crack over their Christmas breaks. They put their heads together and well, at the least, I feel seen…

Thanks to 2k for supplying the codes and the team for putting in the time.

Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin (PC)

Guest Reviewer Reagan Morris, takes the latest Monster Hunter for a spin.

Monster Hunter fans always want more Monster Hunter.

New demo? instant download. A sequel on a system you don’t already own? Add that to the pre-order.

Spin-off franchise with cutesy anime art and a jRPG turn-based monster vs monster battle system?
*long pause*
HELL YEAH LET’S GET ON THAT.

To the fans, it doesn’t matter what happens to the franchise as long as it’s good, and quite simply, Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin delivers.

Pathfinder: Kingmaker Review (Xbox One X)

Welcome to the Stolen Lands of Golarion. You are the Pathfinder, the Kingmaker. Under the direction of Jamandi Aldori, ruler of Restov, you have the chance to make a fair chunk of these lands yours. All you have to do is assemble some companions and get rid of the Stag Lord and his bandits. Easy enough.

I’m absolutely loving Pathfinder: Kingmaker. Even despite a few glitches it has. The biggest problem it has? Launching so close to Wasteland 3.

Warhammer 40,000 Mechanicus, PS4 Review

Warhammer 40,000 Mechanicus will be familiar to die-hard Games Workshop fans, the average gamer, perhaps not so much. Drawing on the very deep and very wide canon of Warhammer 40k, this game adds to a varied pedigree of stablemates.

Considering the complexity the Warhammer family its a shame that the digital versions of these tabletop adventures often fall flat.

It’s fair to say, that first couple of hours of doubt were soon demolished as I understood the systems on offer and gripped the gameplay.

Gears Tactics Review (PC)

In a world full of fear and uncertainty it is nice to return to a world of fear and uncertainty that is worse off than us. Kicking off 12 years before the original Gears of War, Gears Tactics has you taking the role of Gabriel, or Gabe to his friends.

A dedicated member of the Motor Pool who is tasked with a mission well above his pay grade. As you can imagine there is the potential for a LOT of spoilers here so I will say now that this is a spoiler free review.

The Locust Horde is on the rise and it it is up to you to save the people of Sera. But to do this you are going to need some help. So get out there and recruit a team and take the fight to the enemy.

Element Space, PS4 Review

Element Space was a big indie draw for me at PAXAus last year, sadly it didn’t make the show.

The Element Space attraction?

Well, an isometric turn based strategy game always goes down very well. The closer you are to Laser Squad, Enemy Unknown, XCOM the better. At the outset Element Space promised exactly some of that.

If the team had gone all in on the strategical map, added some verticality and destructible environments it would have been a no brainer. I love the action side of the game. I have to wait for the bugs to be patched out before I go further.

Element Space will be worth a pickup after a few fixes, I’m sure Blowfish will see it right.

Octopath Traveler, PC review

I had no idea what to expect when my editor asked me if I was keen to take a look at Octopath Traveler on PC.

I’d obviously heard about Octopath Traveler on the Nintendo Switch but that was about as far as it went.  That said, I’m about mixing things up, so I said “Why not?”. The game is, after all, a big deal apparently.

It’s fun, too.

Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden, PS4 Review

“Tactical” is a word that not only governs much of John Wick’s dress sense, but is also a gaming sub-genre that probably sends shivers down the spine of many younger gamers. But to then pile on descriptors like – “turn based strategy”- I would suspect any self-respecting, Fortnite playin tween would throw a tantrum, yell at his Mum and storm out of the room. So in this day and age of Video Games, will we ever see games of a tactical ilk again?

Well thankfully yes. For those of us who remember games like Laser Squad, the Golden Age of Sid Meiers, Civilisation and of course XCOM, the genre lives on…… boy does it live on!

Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden is an evolved version of the XCOM gameplay model, but with a heavy dose of exploration and stealth, and I have to say…….it is Brilliant. (And there is not a silly dancing or angsty teens to be seen.)
