MediEvil review: Arise, Sir Dan, zombie hordes await

The older we get, we tend to look at things we loved or admired from the past through rose-coloured glasses. Thinking they’re better than they actually were. I think this is the case with MediEvil, a game from the era of the first PlayStation and now been lovingly remastered for the modern PlayStation.

Off the bat, MediEvil seems a strange PS1 game to remaster when there are better candidates that could have received the remaster treatment.

I remember playing a MediEvil game on the now long forgotten PSP (PlayStation Portable), and from memory it wasn’t that well received.

The Player 2 Twenty Four Hour Charity Marathon is back.

So it’s a mouthful, but the Player 2 Twenty Four Hour Charity Marathon is a pretty worthy deal. Now in its fourth year the marathon sees Matt Hewson (editor of Player 2) streaming a variety of games for 24hrs. He won’t be alone, with a few guests young and old joining the effort to raise funds for the Terry Campese Foundation (TCF).

Not forgetting to keep Matt and the crew company through long, wee small hours. Be sure to keep an eye out for moments of madness once the clock passes 2am, we supported the marathon last year and will again. Will #WWE2k20 make an appearance? Well maybe that’s a donation target.

Either way, take a spin around Player 2 this weekend. It’s for a good cause and you might meet some like-minded people.

The Witcher Complete Edition: Geralt of Rivea in the palms of your hands

I’m not really sure what alchemy and magic potions CD Projekt Red & Saber Interactive have evoked to enable one of the finest action RPGs of this generation – The Witcher 3 – to run on Nintendo’s handheld console the Switch but, my God, they’ve done the seemingly impossible and made it happen.

The bottom line here is that yes, The Witcher Complete Edition on Nintendo Switch doesn’t look as good as its console and PC counterparts and pureists will recoil in horror at that, but The Switcher (or Henry Cavil Sim 2019) is an outstanding port of one of the finest action RPGs of all time that is feature complete and I just can’t put it down [I’ve played for hours and hours over the past week].

It’s just perfect for when my better half is marathoning her soup operas and I need something to occupy me.

PAXAus 2019, being there and slightly square

After all the build up and fervour PAXAus 2019 has been and gone. It was a first visit for me, probably not the last, but my old bones are currently arguing against it. Having become something of a big hitter on the gaming calendar I was keen to see this year what all the fuss was about.

As an eclectic gathering of Gaming, Pop Culture and Cosplay it does the job well, and you can see from the eyes of the consumer that wanders the floors glassy eyed that they are getting all the shiny things they need. I enjoyed the relative tranquility of the table-top game area and retro section, it was a relief from the pressing crowds squeezing through the aisles.

The main event was loud, brash and exhausting, especially when I flew in for a single day with a maximum of six hours on the ground.

But, that’s me, at PAXAus 2019, being there and slightly square.

Children of Morta Review (Xbox One X)

Meet the Bergsons, the Children of Morta. John, Linda, Kevin, Mark, Lucy, and Joey. Good, solid hero names if ever there was. Living in the shadow of Mount Morta and entrusted with its protection, life has been pretty good for the Bergsons. Until an evil corruption takes hold with in the mountain.

Now it is time to take up arms and save the sacred mountain they call home.

When it comes to games, I don’t mind rogue-likes, talk to @nzbrowncoat and you might just get a different response. So thankfully for him, I have Children of Morta from Dead Mage Inc. to review and he doesn’t.

Ghost Recon: “Inflection Point”

Once upon a time, there was a Ghost Recon gamer who loved to be sneaky.

With tactics, teammates and guile he would carry out complex, dangerous missions where the fate of the world was at stake.

He… was a Ghost.

But something changed. There seemed to no longer be a need for true Ghosts. 2019 has made this gamer become a new beast, and not something that makes bad guys scared of the dark. He has now morphed into a soft, spongy creature called a ‘Cash Cow’, and his only mission these days is to gobble up shiny trinkets and loot crates.

To be clear, this isn’t going to be our Review, as I think at this point any discerning gamer has enough information available to make an educated purchasing decision. What I intend to do is give some brief thoughts on how I approached my first few hours in Breakpoint.

Then in a few months come back and revisit the title, to see if the developer has come to their senses and made some improvements.

Vigor Review (Xbox One X)

So Norway is the last bastion of hope after nuclear war. Nice. Definitely a decent place to spend you last days on this earth looting and shooting. Why games like Vigor continue to portray man versus man when the world is ending is beyond me.

Surely we would all just get along and make the best of a bad situation? But I guess if that was the case I would currently be reviewing The Sims…

Vigor, the latest Free To Play title to hit the scene seems to be straddling the line between Battle Royale and Survival Shooter. The premise and setting here are fantastic, the long loading and wait times, not so much.

Frostpunk – Console Edition Review (Xbox One X)

The year is 1886 and thanks to massive volcanic eruptions the world is plunging into anther Ice Age.

Man scrambles and builds massive coal powered generators to try and create enough heat to establish areas where humans can continue to live in this harsh new world. But resources are scarce and plenty are needed to ensure people are fed and sheltered. In Frostpunk you need to decide on the priorities and whether it will be order or faith that will see you through.

It is good solid fun. Nothing more, nothing less.

Concrete Genie Review, PS4

Only last week my wife was watching me play another game and she asked ‘why is it always shooting’? Sadly I knew exactly what she meant, then I fired up my Concrete Genie review code and we both got lost for a few hours.

First party developers Pixelopus have created something new and unique, a game that drips with charm and subtlety. It is fair to say although short by some standards Concrete Genie is a beautiful experience that lifts your spirit.

Concrete Genie tells the tale of a boy saving his hometown Denska from darkness with magical graffiti. It is beautiful, colourful and enriching.

Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones Review (PC)

Before getting into modern console gaming I grew up playing cRPG’s like Baldurs Gate, Fallout, Planescape Torment, and Arcanum on the PC.

The play style and isometric view point used in these classics are attributes I hold dear to my heart. So when Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones appeared on the scene, it definitely got my interest. So much so, it made moving back into the office chair from the couch very easy.

But first, a big warning. This is a game for adults. And even some adults may find some of the content offensive. Trust me, I am not easily offended but one conversation with a prostitute even had me taken back.
